ΘΟΥΚΥΔΙΔΟΥ ΤΟΥ ΙΣΤΟΡΙΚΟΥ·


Μνᾶμα μὲν Ἑλλὰς ἅπασ᾽ Εὐριπίδου,
[While all of Greece pays homage to Euripides,]

 ὀστέα δ᾽ ἴσχει
γῆ Μακεδών,
[the sturdy land of Macedonia grows strong,]

 ἧιπερ δέξατο τέρμα βίου.
[and it is at this moment that one shall an end to his life.]

πατρὶς δ᾽ Ἑλλάδος Ἑλλάς, Ἀθῆναι·
[And the most Greece of all Greek nations, Athens:]

 πλεῖστα δὲ Μούσαις
τέρψας ἐκ πολλῶν καὶ τὸν ἔπαινον ἔχει.
[and she enjoys the most praise and rejoicing from the Muses of all her cities.]
