Persius, Satire I

A. PERSI FLACCI SATVRAE SATVRA I

Aulus Persius Flaccus
34-62 AD
Trans RMBullard
Latin (Imperial Era)

O curas hominum! o quantum est in rebus inane!
[Oh you cares of men! O, how great a waste it is in our affairs!]

'quis leget haec?' min tu istud ais? nemo hercule. 'nemo?'

uel duo uel nemo.
['Who says things like these?' Can you really say something like this to me? 'No one, by God. 'No one?' Either two fellows or no one.]

'turpe et miserabile.' quare?

['Its a dirty, sad thing.' And why's that?]

ne mihi Polydamas et Troiades Labeonem

praetulerint?
[Wouldn't Polydamas and the Troiads prefer Labeon to myself?]

nugae.[Bullshit.]

non, si quid turbida Roma 5

eleuet, accedas examenue inprobum in illa
castiges trutina nec te quaesiueris extra.
[No, even as sweltering Rome wakes up, just go ahead in searching for the wicked swarm of folks upon those scales we all know about, and don't inquire about anything not concerning yourself.]
