Marcus Valerius Martialis
1st-2nd c. AD (over 1,900 years ago)
Trans. RMBullard
Latin (Silver Age)

IX

Praestitit exhibitus tota tibi, Caesar,
harena
[Caesar, all the sands of the arena yielded its shows to you,]

     quae non promisit proelia rhinoceros.
[that is, the battles the rhinoceros does not start up.]

O quam terribilis exarsit pronus in iras!
[O how terrible he's burned up in his angers, while he lays down!]

Quantus erat taurus, cui pila taurus erat!
[The bull was worth as much as the spear that was aimed at it!]
