Il Novellino è una raccolta di novelle toscane, risalente almeno all'ultimo ventennio del Duecento.
[The Novellino is a collection of Tuscan short stories appearing approximately at the end of last 20 years of the 13h century.]

L'opera si compone di 100 novelle, scelte dal compilatore da una raccolta più ampia che ne comprendeva forse persino 130;

la maggior parte di esse non è un'invenzione originale, ma è tratta da fonti antiche latine o medievali (in particolar modo dalla tradizione provenzale).

Vari sono i temi sviluppati: storie mitiche, incontri nobiliari, vicende amorose più o meno fortunate.

Quando lo Nostro Signore Gesù Cristo parlava umanamente con noi, in fra l'altre sue parole ne disse che dell'abondanza del cuore parla la lingua.
[When Our Master Jesus Christ used to speak with use, in the form of a man, he speaks the language in which one not only spoke from his own words but from the abundance of his heart.]
Voi c'avete i cuori gentili e nobili in fra li altri,
[You all have gentle and noble hearts here, distinguished from the others,]
acconciate le vostre menti e le vostre parole nel piacere di Dio, parlando, onorando e temendo e laudando quel Signore Nostro,
[Sooth your minds and words in the pleasure of God, by speaking, honoring and respecting and praising that Master of ours,]
che n'amò prima che Elli ne criasse e prima che noi medesimi ci amassimo.
[who loved us before one could cry out "HIM", and before we could love ourselves.']
E se in alcuna parte, non dispiacendo a lui, si può parlare per rallegrare il corpo e sovenire e sostentare, facciasi con più onestade e con più cortesia che fare si puote.
[and if anyone, anywhere, can say that he can feel good in his body and survive, and be sustained by making sure to displease Him, do so with the most honesty and graciousness as one can possibly do.]
Et acciò che li nobili e ' gentili sono nel parlare e nell'opere molte volte quasi com'uno specchio appo i minori
[and now to those who are noble and gentle in their speech and not insignificant in their works, turned over much, like a mirror,]
– acciò che il loro parlare è più gradito però che esce di più dilicato stormento –,
[those whose speech is more measured despite coming from a more delicate 'stormento' [?]]
facciamo qui memoria d'alquanti fiori di parlare, di belle cortesie e di belli risposi e di belle valentie,

E chi avrà cuore nobile et intelligenzia sottile,

si li potrà simigliare per lo tempo

che verrà per innanzi et argomentare e dire e raccontare
[that he is seeing in someone in front of him making prologues, and speaking, and recounting]

E se i fiori che proporremo fossero mischiati intra molte altre parole,
[And if the flows that we set out should be mixed amidst many other words]
non vi dispiaccia:
[let it not displease you.]
ché 'l nero è ornamento dell'oro,
[since darkness is an ornament of gold]
e per un frutto nobile e dilicato piace talora tutto un orto,
[and through a nobile and choice fruit, the whole garden thusly gives delights,]
e per pochi belli fiori tutto un giardino.
[and through small, but pretty flowers, you have an entire garden.]
Non gravi a' leggitori che sono stati molti

Della ricca ambasceria la quale fece lo Presto Giovanni
al nobile imperadore Federigo.

Presto Giovanni, nobilissimo signore indiano,
[Presto Giovanni, the most noble sir of Indian,]
mandoe ricca e nobile ambasceria al nobile e potente imperadore Federigo,
[sent a rich and noble embassy to the noble and powerful emperor Federico,]
a colui che veramente fu specchio del mondo in parlare et in costumi
[to whom it was truly like a mirror of the world in manner of speaking and custom,]
et amò molto dilicato parlare
[and he loved to speak very delicately,]
et istudiò in dare savi risponsi.
[and he was eager to give wise responses.]
La forma e la intenzione di quella ambasceria fu solo in due cose,
[The type and intention of that dispatch was only for two reasons,]
per volere al postutto provare se lo 'mperadore fosse savio in parlare et in opere.
[that is, he wished in any event to prove that he was an emperor wise in speaking and in his tastes.]
Mandolli per li detti ambasciadori tre pietre nobilissime e disse loro:
[He sent through his two assigned ambassadors, three most noble gems, and told them:]
«Donatele allo 'mperadore
["Give these to the emperor]
e diteli dalla parte mia
[and tell him on my behalf]
che vi dica qual'è la migliore cosa del mondo;
[so that he might tell you which is the better worldly thing;]
e le sue parole e risposte serberete,
[and remember his words and responses,]
et aviserete la corte sua e ' costumi di quella,
[and observe his royal court and the costumes therein,]
e quello che inverrete raccontarete a me, sanza niuna mancanza».
[and recall to me everything that you witness, with no omission."]
Fuoro allo 'mperadore, dove erano mandati per lo loro signore,
[They left the emperor's presence, from where they were sent to their master]
salutarlo sì come si convenia per la parte della sua maestade e per la parte dello loro soprascritto signore.
[They saluted him in the proper fashion, in the name of his majesty, and in the name of the above written sir.]
Donarli le sopra dette pietre.
[He gave them the gems I mentioned above.]
Quelli le prese e non domandò di loro virtude:
[So the other man received them, nor did he question their courage:]
fecele riporre, e lodolle molto di grande bellezza.
[he set them <the gems> down, and praised their grand beauty a great deal.]
Li ambasciadori fecero la dimanda loro, e videro li costumi e la corte;

Andar li ambasciadori e rinunziaro e raccontaro ciò ch'aveano veduto et udito,

lodando molto la corte dello 'mperadore ornata di bellissimi costumi,
[praising greatly the emperor's court, which was adorned with finest customs,]
e 'l modo de' suoi cavalieri.
